Two by Two

These were the instructions that Jesus gave to his disciples. But before they went out, he teamed them up in pairs (Mark 6:7).2 Doubtless this plan was intended to provide for his disciples’ needed companionship along the way. Together they could help one another, and when adverse circumstances greeted them as surely often would be the case, they could still find solace among themselves. It reflects again the characteristic concern of Jesus for togetherness.

“And they departed, and went throughout the villages, preaching the gospel, and healing everywhere” (Luke 9:6; see Mark 6:12). The little group of disciples were finally started in the active ministry of Christ on their own.

Of course, this was no excuse for Jesus to neglect his own work. He never asked anyone to do something that he was unwilling to do. So as the disciples went out, the Master likewise “departed thence to teach and preach in their cities”

(Matt. 11:1).
